The toughness of ceramics can be enhanced by a stress induced phase transformation. Barium titanate and lead zirconate titanate ferroelectrics undergo such a stress induced ferroelastic transformation in the form of domain twinning. PLZT is used as a model material to examine the role of transformation toughening under electrical, mechanical, and combined loading. The Vicker`s indentation technique is used to measure toughness. A paraelectric composition of PLZT is used to determine the intrinsic toughness. A ferroelectric ferroelastic composition is used to determine the role of transformation toughening. The toughness of the unpoled ferroelectric composition increases slightly with crack length. When poled, the toughness increases parallel to (and decreases perpendicular to) the direction of polarization.
