Two large scale, 18-state and 20-state, close coupling calculations of positron-hydrogen scattering have been carried out by using the Harris-Nesbet algebraic method at energies below the first hydrogen excitation threshold. Both sets of phase shifts, elastic and Ps formation cross sections for positron-H(1s) entrance channel and Ps elastic and H formation cross sections for Ps-p entrance channel are in good agreement with each other and with the existing accurate data, except for the S-wave phase shifts and S- and P-wave elastic cross sections in the Ore gap where the 20-state basis gives better results than the 18-state basis. A possible reason for such a difference is that the 18-state scheme may not describe the short range interaction well. This work confirms that the 20-or 21-state coupling scheme may be preferably chosen for low energy positron-hydrogen scattering.
