State selective electron capture by low energy state prepared beams of C{sup 2+} ions

Double translational energy spectroscopy has been used to study, for the first time, state selective electron capture by keV beams of state prepared C{sup 2+} ions in collisions with He, Ne and Ar. The C{sup 2+} ions in both the (1s{sup 2}2s{sup 2}){sup 1}S ground state and the (1s{sup 2}2s2p){sup 3}P metastable state were formed in electron capture collisions by 3 keV C{sup 3+} ions in a He target and the desired C{sup 2+} state selected from this first stage target prior to injection into the second stage translational energy spectrometer. The main electron capture channels for collisions of C{sup 2+}(1s{sup 2}2s{sup 2}){sup 1}S and C{sup 2+}(1s{sup 2}2s2p){sup 3}P which were unresolved in the authors` previous work have now been separately and unambiguously identified.
