Population of doubly-excited high-n levels in collisions of H-like C and N ions with He, H{sub x} and N{sub 2}
- Univ. of Nevada, Reno, NV (United States); and others
High-sensitivity measurements have been made of differential cross sections for electron ejection in collisions of C{sup 5+} and N{sup 6+} ions with He, H{sub 2} and N{sub 2} at ion kinetic energies ranging from 22 - 120 keV. In addition to the prominent features in the electron energy spectra due to the Auger decay of ls2l2l{prime} and ls2l3l{prime} autoionizing states, weaker broad features are observed due to higher lsnln{prime}l{prime} states that show strong dependences on target species and collision energy. These dependences may be interpreted on the basis of the potential energy curves for these systems. While the dominant channels are populated by curve crossings and show little energy dependence, the states ls3l3l{prime} and higher are populated primarily by endoergic electron capture, for which the cross sections are strongly energy and target-species dependent. In addition, the electron spectra show possible evidence for single electron capture accompanied by ls excitation of the projectile ion.
