Dissociation of deep-corre-excited CH{sub 3}Cl and CHCl{sub 2}F
- Univ. of Nevada, Las Vegas, NV (United States); and others
Photofragmentation of CH3Cl and CHCl{sub 2}F in the vicinity of the chlorine K edge (2.8 keV) has been studied to search for selective dissociation along specific bonds in the molecules. Such selectivity has been observed for excitation near outer-core-level thresholds but this is the first study in deep core levels, where very-short core-hole lifetimes and Auger-cascade effects may influence fragmentation. Both high-resolution time-of-flight spectroscopy and multicoincidence photoelectron-photoion-photoion (PEPIPICO) measurements were performed at beamline 9.3.1 at the ALS. Dramatic changes in the line shapes for different fragment ions are observed as a function of the excitation energy, and are attributed to pronounced angular distributions of the ejected ions.
