At the In-Tank Precipitation facility (ITP) of the Savannah River Site, strontium and other radionuclides are removed from high-level radioactive waste and are then sent to the Defense Waste Processing Facility (DWPF). Strontium removal is accomplished by ion-exchange using monosodium titanate slurry which removes strontium and other radionuclides from the soluble fraction of the high-level waste. This process creates a form of strontium titanate which has unknown solubility characteristics. Current dose assessment for an individual upon inadvertent exposure to airborne radioactive strontium assumes at all strontium compounds are Class D (soluble) or Class Y (insoluble), and none are Class W (moderately soluble). Pure high-fired strontium titanate (SrTiO{sub 3}) is considered Class Y. The purpose of this project is to determine the solubility of strontium titanate in the form created at the ITP facility. The solubility and dissolution rate of this material are being measured in water, dilute acids, and blood serum ultrafiltrate (SUF). The results will be used to determine the solubility class (D, W, or Y) of the material. The dissolution rate of pure high-fired strontium titanate is being measured and compared to the ITP strontium sorbed on sodium titanate which is produced at low temperature ({approximately}70{degrees}C). The dissolution rate of another form of strontium titanate produced at low temperature is also being measured for comparison.
