Spectroscopic study of state of zeolite in zeolitic alumina-nickel-molybdenum catalysts
Zeolite-containing compositions are used extensively as catalysts in petroleum refining processes. The zeolite (usually Y type) in the catalyst formulation provides a means for regulating the structure of the support and for influencing the phase composition and dispersity of the active phases, thereby increasing the efficiency of hydrotreating, cracking, and hydrocracking processes. In spite of these extensive commercial applications, the role and the state of the zeolite in catalyst systems have not yet been thoroughly elucidated. An area of investigation that is of particular interest is the possibility of ion exchange between the zeolite and aluminum oxide in alumina-zeolite systems (the existence of such exchange between zeolite and aluminosilicates used as the base of zeolitic catalysts has been noted earlier). The authors used the following methods in investigating alumina-zeolite supports and alumina-nickel-molybdenum (ANM) catalysts prepared from these supports with 10% Y zeolite in the Na and Co forms: diffuse reflection electronic spectroscopy DRES; X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy XPS; IR spectroscopy; and X-ray diffraction.
