This paper discusses some applications of gas turbines for the purpose of cogeneration. First, some basic thermodynamic aspects will be considered. The basic aim of cogeneration is to reach the highest power yield possible, with the power yield being the ratio of power to heat generation. The power yield is linked to, but not the same as, cycle efficiency. The thermodynamic data of some gas turbine cycles will be discussed and compared to the pure steam turbine cycle. The main part of the paper will be the discussion of some cogeneration projects with gas turbines. In each case power yield and overall efficiency will be demonstrated. For all cases part-load operation, environmental considerations, and adaptability to district heating parameters is discussed. Finally, the economics of cogeneration with gas turbines is discussed.
