The gas distribution system in the US is made up of about 1.5 million miles of piping, consisting of about 900,000 miles of steel, about 70,000 miles of cast iron, and about 550,000 miles of plastic, mainly polyethylene Older cast iron and steel piping is being renovated rather than replaced when the old pipe still has usable structural integrity, and the pipe size is such that the flow capacity is adequate. Soft lining is a method of trenchless rehabilitation that minimizes the need for surface excavation and can reduce the cost of distribution operations. The Paltem soft lining method of trenchless rehabilitation is offered by Paltem Systems, Inc., of Chesterfield, MO, under license from Ashimori Industry Co., Ltd., of Japan. The Gas Research Institute (GRI) is funding Battelle, an international contract research organization, to develop data and models to estimate the service life performance of liners. The results of this investigation will enable the US gas companies to make rational technical and economic decisions about replacement and renovation of gas distribution systems and thereby reduce costs, increase reliability, and enhance safety.
