Title: Tension leg platforms, in the beginning...

Conference ·
OSTI ID:39204

Over twenty years ago, the idea of a new type of offshore petroleum drilling and production platform was taking shape. The concept would have three main advantages; platform motions would essentially be reduced to planar components with objectional vertical components virtually eliminated, platform configuration would be essentially free of water depth considerations, and use the of compliancy principles would reduce the effect of the environment on the size of the moorings. This concept would become what is now universally known as the Tension Leg Platform, TLP. This paper follows the development, fabrication and installation of the prototype TLP, DEEP OIL X-1. This platform was developed through a Joint Industry Study as a demonstration of the new technology and the ability of the evolving software to predict its performance.
