Structure of pyrolytic boron nitride

Journal Article · · Crystallography Reports
OSTI ID:391365
By transmission electron microscopy and x-ray structural analysis the authors have studied the geometry, orientation, and phase composition of the crystallites and intercrystallite regions of pyrolytic boron nitride h-BN. In the intercrystallite regions they find a pseudoamorphous phase. The presence of a textureless component and its fraction by volume depend on the technological conditions of deposition. On the basis of the results the authors propose a model of the supercrystallite structure of boron nitride, based on the layered arrangement of the crystallites in the azimuthal direction and their columnar arrangement in the deposition direction. The features of the structure together with the graphite-like lattice determine the observed anisotropy of the properties. 13 refs., 3 figs., 1 tab.
