Highly efficient long pulse operation of an advanced 140 GHz 0.5 MW gyrotron oscillator

A TE{sub 10,4} gyrotron oscillator with an advanced built in mode converter and a radial TEM{sub 0,0} output beam was operated with an output power of 0.6 MW at an efficiency of 27% in short pulse operation. The maximum efficiency of 32% (electronic efficiency of 38%) was measured at an output power of 0.5 MW. Long pulse operation up to 0.2 s has been performed. With a single stage depressed collector the efficiency was measured to be 51% at an output power of 460 kW. Irreversible frequency increase during long pulse operation has been observed.
