Mode discrimination in gyrotron cavities is achieved by exploiting selective ohmic effects in a coaxial cavity with a resistive insert. The effectiveness of a silicon carbide coaxial insert in providing radial mode selection is experimentally demonstrated as the total Q factors of TE{sub mp} modes with radial index p {ge} 2 become well below the Q factors for surface TE{sub ml} modes.
