The authors report here the direct synthesis of a hexagonal form of manganese dioxide using mild hydrothermal methods. The reaction of potassium or sodium permanganate in water at 170{degrees}C leads directly to potassium or sodium manganese dioxide, Alk{approx}{sub 0.25}MnO{sub 2}{lg_bullet}0.6H{sub 2}O, with a R3m rhombohedral structure like Li{sub x}(H{sub 2}O)TiS{sub 2} and a 7 {Angstrom} repeat distance indicative of a monolayer of water between the manganese dioxide layers. This maganese oxide reacts readily and reversibly with lithium ions. 57 refs., 4 figs., 2 tabs.
