An Alternative RACT determination was submitted for four mid-sized residual fuel oil boilers as part of NO{sub x} RACT Compliance Plan for a facility in York County, Maine. The Alternative RACT determination included a boiler optimization study outlining the reduction of NO{sub x} by the use of simple combustion modifications. This paper summarizes how, under a range of operating conditions, simple combustion modifications reduced NO{sub x} emissions from above 0.5 pounds of NO{sub x} per million Btu of heat input to below the presumptive RACT limit of 0.3 lb NO{sub x}/MMBtu.
