Based on the results of studies projecting significant technical and economic advantages, magnetic bearings are now beginning to emerge in U.S. electric utility applications. To date, magnetic bearings have been demonstrated in a small boiler feed pump at the New York State Electric and Gas Company`s Greenidge Station and in a large gas recirculating fan at Orange and Rockland Utilities Bowline Point Station. A larger boiler feed pump with submerged magnetic bearings will soon be incorporated in a new Tampa Electric facility. Because magnetic bearings are still relatively novel in electric utility applications, additional development and demonstration is required. To this end, EPRI has established a research project to make utilities aware of the potential for magnetic bearings and to develop guidelines for their assessment, specification, acceptance testing and use in turbomachinery. EPRI also seeks to facilitate cooperative research and development as well as additional demonstrations of magnetic bearings. This paper summarizes the scope and status of the EPRI program, with emphasis on the EPRI guidelines to be published at the end of 1995.
