The radioactive decay of radioisotopes provides an extremely reliable heat source for the generation of electrical power. An obvious concern with the use of radioisotopes is insuring public safety. This paper examines the design and testing of structures in the 60 Watt Isotopic Heat Source (IHS) Heater Head Assembly that insure containment of the radioactive material. The performance of critical structures in the assembly was assessed through testing of simulant assemblies containing depleted uranium or yttrium cores (in place of the radioactive element). High velocity impact tests and X-ray computed tomography (CT) inspections were conducted on simulant assemblies. {copyright} {ital 1996 American Institute of Physics.}
