The electron-impact detachment from the H{sup {minus}} and O{sup {minus}} negative ions is calculated in lowest-order distorted-wave theory. The cross sections are found to be quite sensitive to the choice of polarization potential. Reasonable agreement between the distorted-wave theory and recent ion storage ring experiments for both H{sup {minus}} and O{sup {minus}} is obtained. {copyright} {ital 1996 The American Physical Society.}
