Upcoming ISO 14000 standards are environmental management standards, not costly new performance requirements for industry. The overall objective is to provide a uniform system for companies worldwide to develop effective environmental management systems. The threefold goal is to encourage regulatory compliance, continual improvement in environmental performance, and pollution prevention. For large US multinational companies, ISO 14000 provides an opportunity to strengthen their competitive positions, earn or reinforce credibility with stakeholders, and expand management`s ability to meet broader environmental challenges in the years ahead. This paper reviews the implications of this new ISO standard on international trade, certification requirements, and existing management systems.
