This paper describes a hydraulic model study of an existing pump intake basin of unusual and difficult configuration which resulted in recommendations to transform the basin, with minimum modifications, into a good, workable design providing uniform flow distribution at the level of the pump impellers. The hydraulic model study was authorized by Parsons Power Group Inc. and performed at Alden Research Laboratory (ARL). A new cogeneration plant of 280 MW capacity is being built inside an existing building where a plant of much smaller capacity was previously housed. The pump intake basin of the circulating water cooling system of the former plant, located in the basement of the building, was of nontraditional and difficult configuration and was built on piles. Shape of the existing pump intake basin is contrary to most Hydraulic Institute recommendations. The cooling water for the former plant was drawn from an intake structure in a tidal river through an approximately 1,000-foot-long intake tunnel connected to the pump intake basin. The entire structure is more than 50 years old. The discharge requirement of the cooling system of the new plant is approximately three times that of the former plant, which would magnify the hydraulic losses in the intake tunnel and the hydraulic problems in the pump intake basin ninefold. Building a new intake basin and conduit system based on traditional designs, following the recommendations by the Hydraulic Institute, would have added millions of dollars to the project cost and would also have resulted in intolerable schedule delays. Therefore, it was decided to utilize the existing pump intake basin after suitable modifications and/or introduction of additional devices which would be required to transform the basin into a good workable pump intake.
