Use of EMTP to investigate capacitor bank de-energizing transients
- Commonwealth Edison, Chicago, IL (United States)
This paper describes the use of the Electromagnetic Transients Program (EMTP) to simulate and analyze unusual transient disturbances reported by ComEd field engineers. Unexplained depressions and distortion of 34.5kV bus voltage waveforms were observed following de-energization of shunt capacitor banks. ComEd utilizes these capacitor banks, installed on delta-connected 34.5 kV tertiary windings of 345 kV/138 kV autotransformers, for transmission system reactive support. An EMTP model was developed and switching simulations were performed in which the phenomena was successfully reproduced. The voltage depressions and distortion were determined to be the result of potential transformer saturation, which was caused by low frequency transient oscillations occurring between the capacitor bank and wound-type potential transformers. The EMTP model was also utilized to help determine the impact of the transients on substation equipment, and to investigate potential modifications.
