The mathematical basis for carburizing processes
Carburizing is classified as a common practice in the heat treatment technique. In spite of that, this technology is constantly being developed, by using more and more precise gas analyzers and electronics in the furnaces. The intensive use of modern gas analyzers (infra-red, oxygen probes, etc.) helped mathematical modeling for gas reactions and also for carbon diffusion in steel, improving furnace design, productivity and quality of carburized parts. The main purpose of this paper is not to show the latest state-of-the-art technology on carburizing methods, but to remind that behind all electronics paraphernalia lies a mathematical basis which is of utmost importance to heat treatment experts, because otherwise they will feel helpless whenever encountering any troubles with their gas supervisory systems.
