Parameters, uniformity and trends in plasma carburizing

Since the first hardness plot of a plasma carburized sample was presented in 1972, a lot of investigations have been published on the field of plasma carburizing. A short review of these results will be presented. Then some considerations concerning the reduction of process time and nitrogen as carrier gas will be described. Investigations with different samples make evident that plasma or gas carburizing can result in a better case uniformity, depending on the shape of the sample.
