Glass-ceramic powders with a composition of Li{sub 2}O{center_dot}Al{sub 2}O{sub 3}{center_dot}4SiO{sub 2} (LAS) have been synthesized by the sol-gel technique using LiOCH{sub 3}, Al(OC{sub 2}H{sub 5}){sub 3}, Si(OC{sub 2}H{sub 5}){sub 4}, Ti(OC{sub 2}H{sub 5}){sub 4}, and Zr(OC{sub 2}H{sub 5}){sub 4} as starting materials and investigated and the phase transformation behavior during calcination. Differential thermal analysis (DTA), x-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were utilized to determine the thermal behavior of the gels. Considering the LAS gels with TiO{sub 2} 6.0 wt.{percent} and various wt.{percent} ZrO{sub 2} content, the peak position of {beta}-spodumene phase formation in DTA curves was shifted to a higher temperature when the ZrO{sub 2} content was increased. The activation energy of {beta}-spodumene crystallization was 283.8 kcal/mol for LAS gels with TiO{sub 2} 6.0 wt.{percent} and 2.0 wt.{percent} ZrO{sub 2}. Unlike foregoing studies for LAS gels, during calcination of the dried LASTZ gels from 800{degree}C to 1200{degree}C neither {beta}-eucryptite, nor {gamma}-spodumene was noted to be present. The crystallized phases comprised of {beta}-spodumenes as the major phase and rutile (TiO{sub 2}) together with zirconia (ZrO{sub 2}) are precipitated as minor phases. {copyright} {ital 1996 Materials Research Society.}
