Asymmetry measurements in the reaction pn {r_arrow} {phi}{sup {minus}}pp({sup 1}S{sub o})

The {tilde p}n {r_arrow} {pi}{sup -}pp reaction Proceeds partly via the {sigma}{sub 01} channel (T = 0 for pn., T = 1 for pp), for which a {Delta} in the intermediate state is not possible. We measured analyzing powers and differential cross sections for a subset of this reaction, {tilde p}n {r_arrow} {pi}{sup -}pp({sup 1}S{sub 0}), studied via the d({tilde p}, {pi}{sup -}pp)p experiment at TRIUMF. We isolated the quasifree process {tilde p}n {r_arrow} {pi}{sup -}pp({sup 1}S{sub 0}) with an experimental arrangement that selects relative S wave components of the outgoing diproton. The pion was detected in a magnetic spectrometer, the two outgoing protons in a scintillator bar array. We determined analyzing power distributions at 353, 403 and 440 MeV. The analyzing powers at all these energies are similar to those found earlier at 400 MeV. Recent theoretical results by J. Niskarien are in good agreement with the asymmetry data. These data together with recent {sup 3}He({pi}{sup -}pn)n experiments, where the {pi}{sup -} is absorbed on a {sup 1}S{sub 0} proton pair, may allow a determination of the amplitudes for the {pi}{sup -}pp({sup 1}S{sub 0}) {leftrightarrow} process.
