We have investigated the reaction (N, N`{pi}{sup +}) leading to discrete final states in light nuclei. It is important to isolate the signature of such physical effects as meson propagation in the nucleus, entrance and exit channel interactions, nuclear structure and finite size. We discuss the usefulness of specific kinematic separations (i.e., fixed nuclear momentum transfer, fixed pion angle and energy, variable proton energy loss and angle), ratios of transitions to the same isospin multiplet, and ratios of cross sections for normal to non-normal parity states dominated by the same shell model orbitals in isolating these physical effects.
