Title: The beta-delayed proton decay of {sup 23}Al

Journal Article · · Bulletin of the American Physical Society

The A=4n+3, T{sub z}= -3/2 series of beta-delayed proton emitters are excellent candidates for the experimental study of Gamow-Teller (GT) beta decay. The lightest known member of this series, {sup 23}Al, was first observed using a standard Si-{Delta}E Si-E telescope, with a resulting proton threshold of {approx}700 keV. The 820 keV proton group observed corresponds to an excited state in {sup 23}Mg at 8.43 MeV, 640 keV above the Isobaric Analog State (IAS). Proton decay from the IAS is open by 210 keV and is predicted to have a partial width comparable with the competing 7.79 MeV M1 gamma transition. Recent shell model calculations for {sup 23}Al suggest a very strong GT transition should result in a low-energy beta-delayed proton group. Using our new detector ball, consisting of six gas-{Delta}E gas-{Delta}E Si-E triple telescopes each capable of detecting protons down to {approx}150 keV, we have searched for new low-energy proton groups from {sup 23}Al decay. {sup 23}Al was produced through the {sup 24}Mg(p,2n) reaction at E{sub p} = 40 MeV and transported via He-jet to the center of our detector ball. We have observed several proton groups below 700 keV and new T{sub {1/2}} measurements should allow us to establish a definite assignment.
