Measurements of A {le} 8 nuclei and limits for positive strangelet production in Si + Pt and Au + Pt collisions at the AGS

Journal Article · · Bulletin of the American Physical Society
OSTI ID:387183
Using the 2-GeV/c beam line and spectrometer system at the AGS, experiment E886 has performed a high sensitivity search for long-lived, positively charged particles with large mass-to-charge ratios, M/Z > 3 GeV/c. Such M/Z ratios are expected to characterize stable strange quark matter, or {open_quote}strangelets{close_quotes}, if such exotic objects actually exist. In the course of this pursuit, production cross sections for various ordinary nuclear species (d,t,{sup 3}He, and {sup 4}He) have been measured as well as those for more rare species such as {sup 6}He and {sup 8}He. In addition to upper limits for strangelet production, production cross sections for these composite objects will be presented and compared with coalescence models.
