Longitudinal momentum distributions from fragmentation of {sup 6}He and {sup 8}He

Journal Article · · Bulletin of the American Physical Society

The nuclei {sup 8}He and {sup 6}He have RMS matter radii which are large compared to a He core; thus both are {open_quotes}halo{close_quotes} nuclei candidates. An extended neutron halo is expected to yield a narrow fragment momentum distribution in breakup reactions. We have measured the longitudinal momentum transfer for the fragmentation reactions {sup 8}He {r_arrow} {sup 6}He + 2n and {sup 6}He {r_arrow} {sup 4}He + 2n on low- and high-Z breakup targets. In a preliminary analysis, the momentum distributions from 2-n fragmentation of these nuclei are found to have widths of a {sigma} {approximately} 75MeV/c and 40MeV/c, respectively. We have also investigated the {sup 8}He {r_arrow} {sup 4}He + 4n reaction. The longitudinal momentum distribution for this case of 4-n fragmentation is found to be very broad: {sigma} {approx_gt} 110MeV/c.
