Proton capture on {sup 39}K and its astrophysical implications

Journal Article · · Bulletin of the American Physical Society
OSTI ID:387170
In explosive hydrogen burning the rp-process proceeds through {sup 39}K(p,{gamma}) at temperature below T{sub 9}= 0.4. To determine the reaction rate, measurements have been made in the proton energy range of 300 to 720 keV at the Toronto JN van de Graaff. One new resonance at E(lab)= 669 keV was found and upper limits could be established for possible resonances below E(lab)= 600 keV. In addition the reaction {sup 39}K({sup 3}Hed){sup 40}Ca was measured at E({sup 3}He) = 16 MeV at the Notre Dame FN Tandem van de Graaff. Upper limits for the strengths of Several resonances could be deduced from the measured spectroscopic factors. The resulting reaction rate will be discussed and compared with Hauser-Feshbach calculations.
