Nuclear excitation of the isovector giant dipole resonance in {sup 208}Pb
- Oak Ridge National Laboratory, TN (United States); and others
The nuclear excitation of the isovector giant dipole resonance was studied by detection of photon-ejectile coincidences in the reaction {sup 208}Pb ({tilde p}.p{gamma}{sub o}){sup 208}Pb for 200MeV incident protons. Scattering protons at {theta} = 0{degrees}, 9{degrees} and 12{degrees} relative to the incident beam direction were detected with the K600 spectrograph at IUCF utilizing the recently developed septum magnet. Photons were detected with the ORNL 76 element BaF{sub 2} array configured in 4 19-packs, three of which were in the reaction plane at 45{degrees}, 90{degrees}, and 135{degrees} and one perpendicular to the reaction plane directly above the scattering chamber. Using ground-state gamma decays as a tag, the IVGDR can be cleanly separated from other collective excitations in the same energy region. This experiment will yield information on the isovector proton-nucleus interaction and cast light on the details of the GDR transition density. The experiment is also sensitive to {gamma}-decays through excited low lying states which can provide information on the existence of isovector quadrupole strength in the vicinity of the isoscalar GQR.
