Momentum distributions from quasielastic (e,e{prime}) and (e,e{prime}p) scattering at large momentum transfer

Quasielastic (e,e`) and (e,e`p) scattering from nuclei has been measured at SLAC in the momentum transfer range of 1.0 {le} Q{sup 2} < 6.8 (GeV/c){sup 2}. The experiment used the Nuclear Physics Injector to provide electron beams with energies of 2.0-5.1 GeV. The 1.6 GeV/c spectrometer was used to detect the scattered electrons and the 8 GeV/c spectrometer to detect the recoiling protons. Nuclear targets used were {sup 1}H, {sup 2}H, {sup 12}C, {sup 56}Fe, and {sup 197}Au. The (e,e`) cross sections were analyzed and compared to a y-scaling behavior as expected from a simple impulse approximation model. Data on the exclusive (e,e`p) reaction have been analyzed to extract spectral functions and light-cone distributions. Previous measurements of these distributions extend typically up to Q{sup 2} of 3-4 (GeV/c){sup 2} in the inclusive case, and Q{sup 2} of, 0.5 (GeV/c){sup 2} for exclusive experiments. In proceeding to larger momentum transfer, we probe the electron scattering process in a regime which better approximates a single-particle nature, and so are better able to test our understanding of quasielastic scattering from nuclei in a conventional physics picture.
