Lifetime measurements in {sup 181}Ir and {sup 187}Au
We have recently completed lifetime measurements on {sup 181}Ir and {sup 187}Au, using the Notre Dame {open_quotes}plunger{close_quotes} device, in conjunction with the Argonne-Notre Dame {gamma}-ray facility. The {sup 154}Sm ({sup 37}Cl, 4n){sup 187}Au and {sup 154}Sm ({sup 31}P, 4n){sup 181}Ir reactions were used, at bearn energies of 160 MeV and 140 MeV, respectively. The target was enriched {sup 154}Sm (1.1 Mmg/cm{sup 2} thick) evaporated onto a stretched 1.5mg/cm{sup 2} thick Au foil. Runs of approximately 2 hours in length were taken at 20 target-stopper distances, ranging from 9{mu} to 10000{mu}. The primary aim of these measurements is to study the properties of the {pi}h{sub 9/2} and {pi}i{sub 3/2} proton intruder states which appear in this region. Several members of these bands are cleanly visible in the spectra, and preliminary analysis indicates that it will be possible to extract the lifetimes with sufficient accuracy. Results of complete analyses will be presented.
