Generating weak gauge field masses without symmetry breaking

Journal Article · · Bulletin of the American Physical Society

Semmetry is restored! The standard model of the electroweak interaction introduces an arbitrary scalar field, the Higgs field, and a fundamental symmetry breaking in nature, to generate masses for the weak gauge bosons and interacting fermions. This has long been considered unaesthetic but essential. Here, a weak scalar field is shown to be the outcome of invariance of the electroweak Lagrangian mass term under local SU(2) x U(1) gauge transformation, and leads to the generation of masses for the W and Z particles without symmetry breaking.
