The nucleon mean free path in nuclear matter is calculated in a {sigma}-{omega} model where the coupling constants have been made density dependent in order to reproduce the saturation curve obtained in a Dirac-Brueckner calculation and the real part of the nucleon-nucleus optical potential obtained by a fit of the experimental cross sections. When the modification of the Dirac sea is taken into account in the determination of the coupling constants, the mean free path obtained is much more in agreement with the experimental data. {copyright} {ital 1996 The American Physical Society.}
