{sup 12}C({alpha},{gamma}){sup 16}O cross sections at stellar energies

The excitation function of the {sup 12}C({alpha},{gamma}){sup 16}O reaction and the angular distribution of its {gamma} rays were measured at nine center-of-mass energies ranging from {ital E}=1.37 to 2.98 MeV. These measurements allowed the separation of the {ital E}1 and {ital E}2 contributions and their extrapolation to the region of astrophysical interest. The analysis of all the available {ital E}1 cross sections with the {ital K}-matrix method and with a three-level {ital R}-matrix method yields a consistent prediction of 79{plus_minus}16 keVb for the {ital E}1 {ital S} factor at 300 keV. The {ital E}2 contribution at the same energy is 36{plus_minus}6 keVb from a cluster model analysis of the present data. The best estimate of the total {ital S} factor at 300 keV is 120 keVb, and it is unlikely that it will fall outside the range of 80{endash}160 keVb. {copyright} {ital 1996 The American Physical Society.}
