An investigation of the invariant reactions in BiPbSrCaCuO system

The phases present around the (Bi,Pb){sub 2}Sr{sub 2}Ca{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub {ital x}} (2223) phase between 830{endash}880{degree}C have been studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and electron probe micro-analysis (EPMA) methods. The decomposition and melting temperatures of the 2223 phase in these samples have been measured by differential thermal analysis (DTA) method. Partial substitution of Bi with Pb (Pb:Bi=3:22) does not change the 850{degree}C phase relations around 2223 phase. 2223 decomposes to liquid, Sr{sub 7}Ca{sub 7}Cu{sub 24}O{sub 41} (7724), and Ca{sub 2}CuO{sub 3} at 875{degree}C. The invariant reactions (degree of freedom is zero) among 2223, 7724, Ca{sub 2}CuO{sub 3}, CuO, Bi{sub 2}Sr{sub 2}CaCu{sub 2}O{sub 8} (2212), and liquid were proposed to be: L+7724+Ca{sub 2}CuO{sub 3}{r_arrow}2223+2212, L+7724+Ca{sub 2}CuO{sub 3}{r_arrow}2223+CuO, L+7724{r_arrow}2223 +2212+CuO. The reaction temperatures were estimated to be 860{degree}C, 860{degree}C, and 854{degree}C, respectively.
