; ;  [1]
  1. Washington State Energy Office, Olympia, WA (United States)

This report, cosponsored by the DOE, Bonneville Power Authority, and EPRI, characterizes the motor repair industry in the US, summarizes current motor repair and testing practice, and identifies barriers to energy efficient motor repair practice and recommends strategies for overcoming these barriers. Attention to the quality of motor repair is important because improper repair and rewinding of motors can decrease the efficiency of industrial motors by up to 5% and it is estimated that the average reduction in efficiency after repair ranges from 0.5 to 2.5%. These losses are unnecessary since motors can be rewound without reduction in efficiency. The report is based on an extensive review of the literature, interviews and site visits, and a national survey of motor repair shops.
