Empirical studies conducted by maintenance service companies and OEMs, have shown conclusively that misaligned coupled, rotating machinery is the direct cause of 50% or more breakdowns. Shaft misalignment has been difficult to detect, and corrective procedures have been either inadequate, or complicated and time-consuming. The arrival in the early 1980s of the first laser-optical shaft alignment systems gave fitters and maintenance technicians the opportunity to align couplings faster, easier and more accurately. As this technology has progressed, willingness to attack the shaft misalignment problem has increased dramatically. As a direct result of applying this technology, some startling facts have emerged about rotating equipment energy efficiency, reliability and operating life. The paper discusses reducing power losses, reducing alignment time, and maximizing mean-time-between-failures.
