Continuous-fiber, metal-matrix composites (MMCs) offer great promise as advanced aerospace materials for high-temperature applications. The objective of the present work was to formulate and validate a simple analytical method for predicting the densification kinetics during HIP consolidation of tapecast monotape layup panels with continuous-fiber reinforcements. For this purpose, an expression for the density-versus-time behavior was derived from the flow rule for powder materials. Results of this model were validated by comparison to more detailed FEM calculations and experimental measurements for the consolidation of alpha-two titanium aluminide/silicon-carbide fiber MMCs.
