Review and new results of high enthalpy extraction experiments at Tokyo Institute of Technology

Experimental results of high enthalpy extraction from closed cycle disk MHD generators are reviewed and recent results obtained from a shock tube driven generator which has inlet swirl vanes are reported. A large enthalpy extraction from the generator in FUJI-1 blow down facility has been demonstrated. The achieved highest enthalpy extraction ratio is 18% with cesium seeded argon. FUJI-1 is now under way to be modified into a closed loop. It was shown experimentally that inlet swirl can provide relatively higher Hall voltage and better performance even for lower stagnation temperature and lower pressure as compared with the case of no inlet swirl under the condition of the fixed volume of an MHD channel. The highest enthalpy extraction ratio of 38% was achieved with cesium seeded helium by introducing the inlet swirl.
