Markets for solar and other sustainable technologies can be easily stimulated by public/private educational efforts focused on demonstration projects that serve as public sustainable living learning centers and sales models for the local businesses that provide the appropriate technology or service. Environmental and social goals become opportunities for local economic development. The Florida House Foundation, Inc. (FHF) is a nonprofit regional economic incubator developing demonstration projects which embody the principles of renewable energy, resource efficiency, and sustainability. FHF built a demonstration house and yard on the campus of the Sarasota County Technical Institute in partnership with the Sarasota County Cooperative Extension Service. The model home was designed to appeal to consumers, be marketable by the construction industry, and to generate a real consumer interest in solar and other resource efficient technology. It includes active and passive design, solar systems including photovoltaic, passive water heating and daylighting systems, cisterns, gray water and native edible landscaping.
