Internal tank linings have been used for over 35 years to protect underground storage tanks (USTs) against corrosion and leakage. The proven performance history of lined USTs have given rise to this technology`s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) approval for use in complying with mandated federal requirements for corrosion protection of existing underground tanks. Nationally recognized industry standards for internally lining underground storage tanks provide an acceptable protocol by which applicators (contractors) shall install the lining. These standards address all phases of the process and provide guidelines for structural assessment and internal inspection of the tank shell. Internal tank lining offers UST owners an affordable and reliable alternative to costly tank replacement. The procedure can be accomplished quickly and efficiently with a minimum amount of site downtime. The resulting upgrade to the tank provides not only protection against internal corrosion, but also minimizes the risk of leaks as a result of external corrosion.
