Oxidation of metal droplets in plasma sprays

Although, in some applications, the oxide content of thermal spray metal coatings may improve certain properties, it is generally detrimental for corrosion applications. This study examines the rate controlling phenomena in the oxidation of iron particles during flight and after impact with the substrate. The oxidation of metal particles plasma sprayed in air may occur either in flight or after the impingement of the molten droplets on the substrate. A study of the rate controlling phenomena in these two stages seems to show that the oxidation occurs principally during the time of exposure of the splats to the hot gases consisting in more than 90% of air and plasma gas which surround the substrate, before they are covered by other impinging splats.
