The effects of voltage sags in hospitals

Technical Report ·

  1. Wichita State Univ., Wichita, KS (United States)
Voltage sags can be common in hospitals. They are caused by numerous large, intermittent loads. These include CT scan, x-ray, and other imaging devices. Treatment equipment such as linear accelerators also draw intermittent high currents. The consequences of sags can be severe, ranging from shutdown of computer-controlled devices to failure of life-support equipment. Other problems include reduced image quality and incorrect dosages. Careful attention to proper wiring and grounding will eliminate most voltage sags. Remaining problems can be mitigated with uninterruptible power supplies, power conditioners, and other protection equipment.
