The silver-zinc (Ag-Zn) battery system has been uniquely efficient in satisfying high energy-density applications in a very extensive range of commercial, military, aerospace, and marine applications. These applications have demonstrated the high reliability and safety of this battery system for over 40 years. One major design category comprises the remote-activated type which can produce instant power on demand even after 10 years of inactive shelf life-it is primarily a {open_quotes}one-shot{close_quotes} discharge application. Activation is accomplished automatically by applying a voltage to a pyrotechnic device within the battery assembly. The second major design category consists of the manually activated type utilized in Eagle-Picher battery designs for all the manned space flight programs. The majority of the designs in this category are rechargeable. A large variety of applications requiring up to 150 charge/discharge cycles and 18 months of active life have been produced.
