Aging management studies to monitor and maintain the boiling water reactor (BWR) vessel and internals are being conducted by the Boiling Water Reactor Vessel and Internals Project (BWRVIP). The BWRVIP focuses exclusively on reactor vessel and vessel internals issues of operating plants. BWRVIP members have committed to sharing resources and information to lead the BWR industry toward generic resolution of vessel and internals integrity and operability issues. The BWRVIP results will also be used by the Boiling Water Reactors Owners Group (BWROG) to assess long-term aging management needs to support US plants who wish to extend their operating licenses beyond 40 years. The BWRVIP and BWROG are associations of utilities which own and operate a BWR. This paper describes the strategy, goals, and objectives of the BWRVIP and how it relates to current day operations and to the support of license renewal. It defines the technical scope and the general approach for each of the five BWRVIP tasks (Integration, Assessment, Inspection, Repair and Mitigation), including an overview of task activities. It also defines the general approach of the BWROG in applying this information to operation beyond 40 years (i.e., the renewal term).
