Superfluid {sup 3}He in 98.2% open aerogel
The authors report measurements of the superfluid fraction and transition temperature of pure {sup 3}He in 98.2% open aerogel. Both the superfluid fraction and the onset temperature are strongly pressure dependent and show substantial suppression from their bulk values over the pressure range of 2.7 to 28.5 bar. The abrupt onset and nearly linear development of the superfluid fraction are in marked contrast to behavior in other confining geometries. Together with the finding that T{sub c} does not occur at a fixed value of the temperature dependent coherence lingth, the results imply that the aerogel functions as an impurity rather than as a surface near which superfluidity is suppressed over a healing length.
