Measurement of the {sup 1}H({sup 6}He,{sup 6}Li)n reaction at 0{degrees}
- and others
The {sup 1}H({sup 6}He,{sup 6}Li)n reaction was studied at 0{degrees} using the NSCL A1200 magnetic spectrometer. Proton induced (p,n) reactions have been used extensively to probe weak interaction strengths. The limitation of stable targets has constrained (p,n) work to the valley of {beta}-stability. The authors have used a radioactive beam in inverse-kinematics to measure the relative Gamow-Teller strengths between the ground state of {sup 6}He and the ground and excited states of {sup 6}Li. The A1200 spectrometer was used in dispersion-matched mode with its first half set to focus the {sup 6}He secondary beam onto a CH{sub 2} reaction target, and the second half of the spectrometer was used to analyze the reaction products. The {sup 6}He beam energy was 560 MeV, and the energy spectrum of the {sup 6}Li produced was measured with an energy resolution of {approx} 700 keV. The angular distribution was measured out to 7{degrees} in center of mass, using ray tracing techniques. The experimental technique will be described and results given. The nucleus {sup 6}He is a known halo nucleus, and the results will be used to investigate the effect of the extended {sup 6}He neutron distribution on the charge-exchange process.
