Strange particle production in heavy-ion collisions at the AGS

The topic of strangeness production in relativistic heavy-ion collisions has been the subject of intense study due to the belief that the strange sector may be particularly sensitive to the QCD phase-transition in hot and/or dense hadronic matter. In particular, it has long been thought that strange-particle yields may be enhanced by quark-gluon plasma (QGP) formation though this {open_quotes}signature{close_quotes} is significantly complicated by contributions from {open_quotes}ordinary{close_quotes} hadronic processes. It has also been suggested that the restoration of chiral-symmetry in the QGP phase may significantly affect kaon production and the mass and/or width of the hidden {open_quotes}strangeness{close_quotes} {phi} meson. Experimental results from several experiments at the AGS will be presented, along with measurements of strange meson (K{sup {+-}},K{sub s}) production, {Lambda}, {bar {Lambda}}, and {Xi} production and {phi} production in {sup 28}Si+A and {sup 197}Au+A collisions. Recent measurements of the centrality dependence of the {phi} meson mass and width will be presented, along with measurements of low-p{sub {perpendicular}}s kaon production which show a remarkable enhancement that may result from modification of the kaon mass in the hot hadronic medium.
